So I hear you asking what is an ATC?
Well ATC stands for Artist Trading Card. They were used in the 16th Century as an art form and exchanged by artist to learn new techniques.
Today they are swapped much like the baseball card is swapped. They are never sold only traded/swapped for another card or cards. All its costs is the postage. Cards are made on card stock, I have used watercolour paper and stuck that to a card. Each card is unique they can be a one off or a series of cards that are numbered.
The only rules are:
The dimensions of the card must be 2.5 x 3.5 inches (64 x 89 mm).
The cards must be traded - never bought or sold.
Bookmarks are also made they can be mini book marks measuring 3.5 inches x 1.5 inches or larger ones measuring 2 inches x 6.5
Any medium can be used so whatever you can think of it is fine. I use all sorts of things, water colours, acrylic paints, gel pens, wax crayons, colouring pencils, stickers to embellish things, buttons, feathers, paper, pictures from magazines to create a collage, stamps, punches, postage stamps just about anything. The limit is your imagination.
Did you say I cannot draw? join the club neither can I. I trace things, first I make sure there is not a copyright so I use free clip-art pics a lot. I alter them to suit what I want by adding or subtracting things. I may use a basic shape and add stuff to it or take a picture and use only part of it. Old paintings are great for this and you can find loads on the Internet.
There are different types of Swaps to choose from
Open Swap: These swaps are still open for people to sign up. Once they have met there goal of how many may sign up it then gets moved into Active Swaps. Some swaps have no limit as to how many sign up where others will list a specific number of persons for that swap.
Active Swap: These are swaps still going on but can no longer be signed up for. Here you will communicate with the group in your swap as to any problems and posting if you've mailed out and so on.
Themed Swap: These are swaps with a specific theme given to them. Your cards must follow the rules given by the host of the swap and the theme. Example: Nature swap, Pen and Ink Swap, Abstract Swap they must be just that. All is explained by the host if you are not sure you can ask the host what they want by sending them a PM.
Blind Swap: These are swaps done by members without themes and without choosing a card from that member your trading with. You get what you get. It's like a surprise swap.
One On One Swap: These swaps can be blind swap or picked swaps. That is when you look at cards available by members and PM them what you like. Then they respond with what available cards you have that they like and you agree to trade.
There are others as well but most people go to the Open swaps and pick a theme that interests them and make the cards to trade with the host.
It is not as complicated as it sounds and really good fun. All names and address are passed on by PM no names or address are put on the board for all to see.
Here is the forum I belong to:
www.atcards.com/forums/index.php
It is a friendly place and I love making the cards. Once you have made the cards you put the name of the theme on the back date them add your name and address and email. Along with them you place a Signature card in with them( a bit like a business card) and a goodie bag as well. This is optional but a nice thing to do and to get. You can add all sorts of things to a goodie bag, paper, beads, buttons, ribbons, lace, feathers, anything that can be used in art and craft.
I keep a note book of what I am making. I list what the theme is, how many cards I need to make, the date they are to be complete by and who I am sending them to. When they are complete I note when I posted them and when I get the cards in return.
Here is a sample of the cards I have traded.
For a Paisley Pattern Swap
For a Crown Me swap
For Anything Goes Bookmark Swap
For Wheels Rings and Other Round things Swap
